elderberries

What is elderberry?

Elderberries are black or blue-black berries that come from a Black Elder tree or shrub (Sambucus nigra). Elderberries are grown in the warmer parts of Europe, North America, Asia, and Northern Africa. While elderberries are used to make pies, jelly, and wine, they are also used as a staple in folk medicine to treat colds and/or flu.

For 10 years, Jack + Co has been making Elderberry Syrup in Pecatonica, Illinois. Following the mantra that plants and foods should be used to heal the bodies, Jack + Co handcrafts their elderberry syrup in small batches using organic, local ingredients.

Elderberries are high in antioxidants and dietary fiber. They are also rich in vitamins A, B6, and C. and folic acid, potassium, manganese, beta carotene, and iron! In addition to being used to treat coughs, colds, and flu, elderberries may be used:

  • to lower cholesterol,

  • to improve vision,

  • to strengthen the immune system,

  • to improve heart health,

  • as an antioxidant, and more!
